RIBBED EDGE PLATE - 1

shape

This is what we will be making.

The screenshots are from PSP Version 8 but you should be able to use Version 7, too.

You will need Paint Shop Pro.  An evaluation copy may be downloaded HERE
and you will also need the Two Moon Filter which may be downloaded HERE.

1. Open a new image 350 x 350 pixels, transparent.

2. Click on your Preset Shapes tool . On the tool ribbon use the settings below:

3. Click on the materials palette and set your foreground color to null and your background to the color you want for your plate.

4. Click on the Preset Shapes tool again. Position your cursor at 175, 175. Right click and hold and, while holding down your shift key, pull out a circle almost to the edge of your canvas.

5. Go to Selections>From Vector Object. Go to Selections>Load/Save Selection>Save Selection to Alpha Channel. Click Save. Now go to Layers>Convert to Raster Layer.

6. If you want a different color for the center of your plate change your background color here. Click on the Preset Shapes tool again. Position your cursor at 175, 175. Right click and hold and, while holding down your shift key, pull out a circle to the size you want your plate center. If you are using the same color as the edge you won't be able to see it but that's okay. Repeat Step 5. You should now have this:

plate 2

7. Leave selected but hide this layer (Raster 3). Activate Raster 2 layer and hit your delete key. Deselect.

8. Open your Two Moons Filter and select Rotoblades. Change the first slider to 12 and leave the others at their default of 128 as below. (Note-if your color is very light or very dark you may not see the effect. Adjust your color and try again.)

Rotoblades

Apply the filter and you should have this:

Plate 3

9. Add a new raster layer. Go to Selections>Load/Save Selection>Load Selection from Alpha Channel and choose Selection #1. Load. Flood fill with the same color you used for the ribbed edge.

10. Go to Selections>Modify>Contract and contract by 4 pixils. Hit your delete key and deselect.

11. Go to Effects>3D Effects>Inner Bevel. Use the settings below making sure the color is set to your ribbed section color:

Inner Bevel

12. On the same layer go to Selections>Load/Save Selection>Load Selection from Alpha Channel. Choose Selection #2. Load. Apply a drop shadow by going to Effects>3D Effects>Drop Shadow and use settings of V=0, H=0, Opacity=20, Blur=25. Color black. Leave selected.

13. On your layer palette unhide Raster 3 layer and make it your active layer. Go to Selections>Modify>Expand and expand the selection by 1 pixil. Using your Flood Fill tool fill it with the same color you did before. This gives a smoother edge to the center section.

14. If you want a design on your plate, add a layer and add your design to the center. You'll probably need to lower the opacity of the design to about 58 to have it blend well with the plate.

15. Go to your layer palette and right click on any layer. Choose Merge>Merge Visible. Save your image as a tube.
